O’zapft is! The 181st Oktoberfest has kicked off in Munich. This lively annual crowd-puller started as a wedding celebration of Crown King Ludwig and Queen Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810. The generous king invited citizens of Munich to eat, drink, and enjoy horse races and shooting displays for 5 days. The feast was such a great success that they decided to stage it next year, too. One year after another, it has become a traditional Munich event. In the queen’s honour the festival ground was named Theresienwiese, or, short – Wiesn.
