In the spirit of Christmas and the advent calendar, we bring you 24 car hire tips that will either save you money or give you some new travel and car hire ideas. The first 12 tips (or calendar windows) are in this post, so stay tuned for the final 12 in the upcoming second part!
Window #1: Free Upgrades
Before you go ahead and make a search on our booking engine, make sure you know whether some suppliers offer free upgrades in your destination. These upgrades can either be for a larger or better equipped car, but are sure to save you money either way! Find the updated list of upgrades here.
Window #2: Off-Season Travel
For a very budget-friendly holiday, make sure you travel in the off season, when the number of people travelling to your chosen destination is relatively low. Southern European countries, for example, experience lower tourist levels in the winter months, which causes car hire prices to plummet! Traditional skiing countries in Central Europe are, conversely, cheaper during the summer.
Window #3: Winter Tyres
If you are travelling during winter in a country with snow, you simply have to make sure your car hire is equipped with winter tyres. Luckily for Auto Europe’s customers, many of our rates already include winter tyres, which means that these do not have to be booked and paid for separately. Find out more here.
Window #4: Visit South Africa
South Africa is a destination with affordable car hire nearly all year round, with prices often starting at less than ten pounds a day! Although the plane tickets will cost more, the amazing sights in South Africa and the money you save on car hire will make it worth the price!
Window #5: Free GPS
When driving in a new place, a satnav is an almost indispensable travel companion. Many of the suppliers we work with offer rates that include a GPS. This way you can avoid the hassle of booking and paying for one locally. Take a look at the list of destinations!
Window #6: Geneva Airport
Geneva is a wonderful destination to visit in itself, and also a popular gateway to the Alps. What many visitors may not know, however, is that Geneva Airport is divided into a French and Swiss side, and that car hire prices tend to be much lower on the French side. So make sure you book and pick-up your car on the right side!
Window #7: Bring Your Credit Card
It is absolutely necessary that the main driver (the name on your car hire voucher) of your rental has a credit card with a high enough credit limit with them when picking up the car. This is because the local supplier will require a security deposit to be held on the credit card. If the main driver does not have a credit card, you may incur significant extra costs or not be allowed to pick up the car at all.
Window #8: Free Additional Driver
If you are travelling with other driving licence holders, you may want to let others take over the wheel every now and again. Additional drivers (other drivers besides the main driver), must be signed on locally with the supplier, and often incur an extra charge. But fear not, Auto Europe offers rates that already include an additional driver in the price! Find these deals listed here.
Window #9: Campervan Hire
For a holiday with a different flavour, why not try campervan hire from Auto Europe? You can really set your own itinerary when you are travelling with a “home on wheels”, and save on accommodation costs too! Learn more about campervan hire with Auto Europe here.
Window #10: One Way Hire
Booking a car hire is especially convenient if you want to fly to one destination and take a road trip to another. However, if you want to drop off the car in a different location from the one where it was picked up, you need to ensure that this is permitted by the supplier, and whether there is an additional fee. If you make a booking for a one way rental which we need to verify with the supplier, you will be informed by us.
Window #11: Refundable Excess and Super Cover
Auto Europe offers a Refundable Excess product and two separate products including Super Cover. All of these products seek to give you added protection when hiring a car, by providing a refund if you are required to pay for damage caused to the vehicle, for example. These products are usually much more affordable than purchasing additional insurance locally. Please carefully read our Excess Protection Explained page to better understand these products and the applicable terms and conditions.
Window #12: Weekend Specials
Car hire is the perfect means of transportation for enjoying a weekend away. You can now save on your next weekend trip by booking a weekend special. Many of the suppliers we work with offer these deals, where the price of the hire will be lower if it takes place between Friday and Monday morning. Find examples here.
