Palace of Diocletianus (Daenerys’ Throne Room)
All fans of Game of Thrones know that in the third season there is a turning point for the character of Daenerys. Her beautiful palace can be seen live in Split and it used to belong to Diocletian, one of Roman emperors. Split has many attractions but this palace is by far the most popular sight, so impressive and certainly worth a visit. You will find it in the heart of the city with plenty of other sites to see in the vicinity. Near the palace, there are restaurants, bars and shops. Children playing or locals hanging out their colourful laundry on the ropes in old, marble stone houses are also a common sight.
Klis Fortress (Daenerys’ Fortress)
After Daenerys has freed a few towns from slave trade and has attracted more followers, she moves into her new fortress, which is in reality the fortress of Klis.
This medieval fortress is also located near Split above a village that separates mountains Mosor and Kozjak. Back in the day, the Klis fortress was used as a defense threshold against Ottomans in Dalmatia. There are still weapons, armours and traditional uniforms to be seen in the museum.
Dubrovnik (King’s Landing)
There are about 12 locations in Dubrovnik used for filming the medieval walled city of King’s Landing. You could hire a car in Dubrovnik and visit all of them including the beautiful area around the city. Another option is to pick up your rental car in Split or Zagreb and set on your own journey across Westeros.
