Getting in the car and setting off on a summer adventure is made even better thanks to the Beach Boys and Pharrell Williams, according to a major new survey by Auto Europe.
UK motorists seem to like to mix classics with contemporary when creating the perfect playlist for their road trips, no matter where they are headed, with the most popular song among respondents being 50-year-old summer anthem ‘Good Vibrations’ by America’s answer to the Beatles, the Beach Boys and with Pharrell Williams’ 2014 anthem ‘Happy’ coming second.
Auto Europe’s survey suggests that good songs never go out of date, even if they were released almost half a century ago and they can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with modern hits, as long as they make listeners feel like summer has well and truly started.
Other hits that proved popular among respondents, included: ‘Lovely Day’ by Bill Withers; ‘Beautiful Day’ by U2; ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ by Cyndi Lauper; ‘Sweet Dreams’ by Eurythmics; and Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’, indicating that UK motorists have a very eclectic taste in music when it comes to putting together the soundtrack to their road trips.
Along with golden oldies on the radio, respondents knew exactly what they wanted to see when hitting the road this summer and knew absolutely who they didn’t want joining them in the car – with their boss unsurprisingly topping the list, followed by the in-laws, an ex-partner, a current love interest and work colleagues.
And it seems UK motorists crave scenic roads and lush greenery, as well as the opportunity to sample the delights that coastal towns and villages can offer and beautiful backdrop mountain views can provide when on a road trip. Some want the terrain to be rough to lend a sense of adventure to the drive while others wouldn’t mind getting lost to add to the excitement.
