Summer holiday destinations for Brits – best of 2017

Under the drawer, inside an empty Marmite jar, tucked in between clothes, or even under the mattress. What do all these places have in common? They make for great spots to keep money away from your partner’s eyes. A recent study by Auto Europe just revealed that nearly a quarter of British grown-ups have money undisclosed from their counterparts. And data also shows that the majority of Brits (27.3%) are saving money to afford a holiday. Inspired by these statistics, let’s explore the hottest summer holiday spots this 2017.

Sunny side up

An astounding 38% of British secret money savers are longing for sun soaked breaks in Europe. In terms of sun exposure, it doesn’t get much better than Valletta, with over 2,957 hours of sun exposure per year. Malta‘s capital is an enchanted place overseeing the Mediterranean. It is also the perfect summer holiday spot to stroll down on the historical narrow streets with Baroque architecture and its fortified city walls.

Additionally, you can visit the local museums and jaw-dropping Cathedral of St John, decorated with stone carved arches and an opulent interior, painted by Caravaggio. After admiring this historical city, take your rental car to nearby beaches such as Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa and Mellieħa Bay for a relaxing time.

Tropical flavour

Honolulu is amongst the best tropical paradises in the world, and will have Brits falling head over heels. According to the study, 30% of them are saving for a tropical holiday in a remote location, and the Hawaiian capital will not let them down. Be sure to learn more about the rich local culture and World War II history. Honolulu is also going through an increasingly cultural awakening, hosting a Biennial for the first time in 2017. Admire the work of celebrated international and local artists throughout a number of walls and facades of the Waikiki neighbourhood. Moreover, this area is also famous for being a nightlife, dining and shopping go-to. Finally, nature lovers must visit the nearby stunning beach of Hanauma Bay, with Grecian blue water and fluffy yellow sand.

A British stretch of sand

Beaches in the UK are not to be outdone, and 24% of Brits agree. An underrated place to bask in the summer breeze at a local seaside destination is Porthcurno. Located on south coast of Cornwall, it is a great value for money destination. It will be warm enough, we promise. This place is famous for being the county’s most beautiful bay and it is hard to argue with such statement. Easily accessible, Porthcurno lays beneath the cliff top of Minack Theatre. Its thin white sand is ideal for an entire day of fun and relaxation. Play volleyball and enjoy a bright sunny day surrounded by the inviting clear blue water and impressive granite cliffs. Furthermore, adventurous times continue with a drive to the neighbouring idyllic Valley of Porthgwarra and its remote local beach.

Swapping the beach for a lake

A city break in Europe is the reason for maintaining savings accounts for over 21% of Brits. And, if that’s your case, here’s the perfect suggestion for you – Lucerne. This stunning city in the heart of Switzerland is overflowing with medieval charm. The place harmoniously combines small cafés encrusted in narrow alleys with modern buildings and a booming touristic industry. Saunter around Lake Lucerne, visit the 2017 inaugurated Bürgenstock, and, for a once in a lifetime experience, reach Mount Pilatus by boat and air cables. The summit blesses its visitors with a picturesque countryside view. Finally, don’t forget to sample the local cheeses, chocolates and Alpine butter.
